DESCRIPTION:Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan\nSensational Strings\n\nPadma Shri Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan represents the seventh generation of the Etawah Gharana\, a musical tradition or “family” committed to this most famous of Indian instruments – sitar. Instructed by his father and guru\, Ustad Aziz Khan\, he has also been influenced by sitarist Ustad Vilayat Khan and vocalists Ustad Amir Khan and Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. He is a master of both the melodies of Raag and the rhythms of India – north\, and south.\n\nBeing first trained\, from age 3\, in the classical vocal music that forms the foundation of the “gayaki ang”\, it would be several years before he would be allowed to pick up a sitar. The young Shahid Parvez Khan\, recognized as a child prodigy\, started performing in public by the time he was only eight years of age.\n\nHe is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including the Government of India’s ‘Padma Shri’ and the ‘Sangeet Natak Academy Award.’ Widely recognized as one of the greatest sitar players in the world\, Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan has performed in all major musical festivals in India and abroad. Born into a musical family\, he was inspired by his mother\, who was a disciple of the late Pt. Nikhil Banerjee. He then learnt from his uncle Pt. Kartick Kumar\, who was a senior disciple of Pt. Ravi Shankar. Indrajit has a special touch on sitar that combines technical virtuosity with sensitivity. DESCRIPTION:Ramneek Singh & Pankaj Mishra\nLyrical Vocal & Mesmerizing Sarangi\nPerformances of Khayal\, Bhajan and Sufiana\n\nVidushi Ramneek Singh is an internationally acclaimed Hindustani classical vocalist who now makes her home in Toronto. Coming from the rich lineage of Ustad Amir Khan’s Indore Gharana\, Ramneek is proficient in musical genres like Khayal\, Thumri\, Bhajan\, Shabad\, Sufiana and Folk.\n\nRamneek received Sangeet Visharad in vocal music from Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth in 1988\, and has studied under Ms. Amarjeet Kaur\, a senior disciple of the legendary vocalist Ustad Amir Khan. She has performed all over Canada\, USA\, UK\, Australia and India\, she has created her own niche in the music world through her unique style. She runs a music academy “Sur-rang Music Academy” through which she is training many students all over the world in the art of vocal classical music in the Indore Gharana style.\n\nRamneek will be accompanied by Pankaj Mishra on Sarangi and Gurinder Singh on Tabla.\n\nPankaj Mishra\, who has recently made Toronto his permanent home\, comes from a long line of musicians. He is the the great grandson of Sarangi virtuoso late Pandit Saraju Prasad Mishra\, grandson of late Pandit Mahadeo Prasad Mishra and son of Shri Satya Narayan Mishra. He began learning music at an early age\, taking his taalim from Pandit Mahesh Prasad Mishra.\n\nPankaj’s sensitive style of playing and interpretation is admired and sought after by a wide range of musicians. He has performed solos\, accompanied senior vocalists like Late Vidushi Girija Devi and tabla maestros like Pandit Kumar Bose. He has performed at prestigious festivals around the globe. A child prodigy\, Ustad Irshad Khan has emerged among the torch-bearers of the iconic Sitar Gharana\, the Imdad Khani Etawah Gharana.\n\nIrshad Khan has developed and advanced the technique of Surbahar and Sitar by introducing many musical innovations\, including left hand meends and right hand tantra techniques. His style is a combination of the authentic gayaki ang and tantra ang Baaj (both Vocal and instrumental playing on the Sitar)\, gaining comprehensive mastery over every major aspect of Hindustani classical music.\n\nHaving performed at major venues and festivals around the globe\, Irshad Khan is considered among the leading Surbahar and Sitar players of today. DESCRIPTION:Steve Oda: In his Guru’s Footsteps\nCelebrating the Centenary Birth Year of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan\nSteve Oda began his musical education at the age of seven\, learning to play slide guitar and later\, jazz guitar. Born in Toronto to second generation Japanese-Canadians\, Steve’s love of creativity through musical expression led him to the classical music of North India and the Sarode. For over 45 years Steve Oda has dedicated himself to learning this complex art form and carrying on the teachings of his illustrious guru\, the legendary musician\, the late Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. After Khansahib’s passing in 2009\, Steve continued his studies under Padmashri Pandit Rajeev Taranath\, a senior disciple of Khansahib.\n\nSteve has performed in Australia\, New Zealand\, India\, Japan\, Europe\, Canada\, and throughout the U.S. He currently resides in San Francisco\, actively teaching and performing this sublime art form.\n\nOn the centenary year of Khansahib’s birth\, Steve will perform various raags composed by the maestro.
