SUMMARY:Parallel Traditions: Exploring Classical Music from Northern India
DESCRIPTION:Raag-Mala Toronto is very proud to be partnering with University of Toronto’s Massey College for one of their Music Salon Series events. This is part of Massey College’s Focus on India.\n\nRenowned tabla player Ravi Naimpally and saxophonist Andrew Kay will be jointed by Junior Fellow and Indian Classical Music (ICM) trained vocalist Sourojeet Chakraborty\, in conversation with Junior Fellow and jazz bassist Sam Little.\n\nSourojeet\, Ravi and Andrew will each perform a piece representing a key element of the Hindustani classical music tradition\, and all three will join for a collaborative piece at the end. We invite you to join us in learning about a musical tradition with centuries of history that runs parallel to the western classical music idiom.\n\nThis event will be livestreamed via Massey College’s YouTube channel on Wednesday\, November 2nd 2022 from 7:45 to 9pm.\n\nProgramming Update: Unfortunately\, there were technical issues with the live steaming of this event. He is the great-grandson of Sarangi virtuoso late Pandit Saraju Prasad Mishra\, grandson of late Pandit Mahadeo Prasad Mishra\, and son of Shri Satya Narayan Mishra. He began learning music at an early age\, taking his taalim from Pandit Mahesh Prasad Mishra. Pankaj’s sensitive style of playing and interpretation is admired and sought after by a wide range of musicians. He has performed solos\, accompanied senior vocalists like Late Vidushi Girija Devi and tabla maestros like Pandit Kumar Bose. \nGeet Mishra comes from a long line of musicians\, and began her musical journey by learning santoor. Most recently\, during the pandemic\, she began learning sarangi from her father Pankaj Mishra. \nGeorge Koller is a prolific composer and producer. Recognized primarily as a bass player\, George also plays a variety of instruments. He has had an interest in Indian Classical Music for over three decades and began learning sarangi from Pankaj Mishra during the pandemic. Raag-Mala Toronto thanks the Ontario Arts Council for their long standing support.

DESCRIPTION:Raag-Mala Toronto in partnership with Shadaj\nis proud to present a vocal recital by\nApoorva Gokhale & Pallavi Joshi \nwith Sanjay Deshpande on Tabla\nand Leeladhar Chakradev on Harmonium\nSunday November 28th\, 2021 at 11 am ET\n\nOnline on the\n“Shadaj Baithak” YouTube channel \n  \nApoorva Gokhale was born into a family of traditional legendary musicians. She has carved a niche for herself as one of the sought-after well-known vocalists of the younger generation with a firm background of Gwalior Gharana. She has an impressive musical lineage and has proudly and responsibly inherited the musical qualities from her grandfather\, the late Gayanacharya Pandit Gajananbuva Joshi and her great- grandfather Pandit Antubua Joshi\, an eminent court musician in the erstwhile state of Aundh\, district Satara. \nPallavi Joshi has inherited traditional music and represents the 5th generation of the rich heritage of her family. Her training started at the age of 5 from her grandfather\, Pandit Gajananbuva Joshi whose gayaki was a perfect blend of three gharanas Gwalior\, Jaipur and Agra gharana. After the demise of Pt. Gajananbuva Joshi\, she has taken her training from her uncle Pt. Madhukar Joshi and received guidance from her aunt Dr. Sucheta Bidkar & from her father\, Shri. Manohar Joshi. Samidha Joglekar \nconducted by \nManoshi Chatterjee \nSaturday September 11th\, 2021 at 11am EDT \n  \nFREE VIRTUAL EVENT  \nEvent Access: \nWatch on Facebook \nWatch on Youtube \n  \nSri Narendra Datar began his formal musical training in 1976\, under the highly respected vocalist Pandit Vasantrao Kulkarni. He came to Canada in 1984\, completing an M.Sc. in computer science at the University of New Brunswick. He has resided in Toronto since 1986\, where he has been active as a teacher and a performer of Hindustani classical music and other genres. Narendraji is also a composer\, and has won numerous awards for his singing and compositions. \nSmt. Samidha Joglekar is an accomplished vocalist who began her training in both Western and Hindustani classical music from an early age.  She has studied under her Guru Sri. Narendra Datar for many years. The recipient of several prestigious grants\, Samidha has furthered her study of the art form and has contributed her voice to many albums\, film scores and cross cultural collaborations.  She has a MClSc degree in Audiology and currently is an advisor and manager for the College of Audiologists & Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario. \nSmt. Manoshi Chatterjee has been on the Raag-Mala Toronto Board since 2015.  She is an educator at an elementary school\, and has a passion for raag sangeet. She completed her Sangeet Visharad and sang regularly for AIR in India. She is also a published poet\, and has made numerous appearances on TV and other media in programs such as “Cultural Journeys with Manoshi”\, in which she has interviewed prominent artists such as Pt. Rajan and Sajan Misra and Pt. Budhaditya Mukherjee.
