She began her training with Late Pandit Vasantrao Kulkarni of the Agra/Gwalior gharanas (singing traditions)\, and subsequently received training from many great artists such as the late Gaanasarawati Kishori Amonkar (Jaipur-Atrauli)\, Late Pandit Dinkar Kaikini (Agra) and Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar (Gwalior). \nShe has taken influences from the various gharanas and created a style of singing that is suited to her unique tonal quality and vocal range.  Whether she is singing a bada khayal (which requires a gradual elaboration of a raag from a slow tempo to a rapid one towards its end)\, or performing a light-hearted thumri or singing a bhajan\, Arati’s captivating badhat (development of the composition) and the passion she imbues in her renditions are what make her a favourite among aficionados and won over newer listeners of raag sangeet (Indian classical music). \nArati has also sung film songs for Hindi\, Marathi and regional cinemas. She received the best play back singer award for Konkani film Anternaad in 2006 and for the Marathi film Samhita in 2012. She also received numerous awards such as the Maharashtra State Award as the best playback singer\, V. She was awarded the Padma Shree in 2025 for her contribution to the arts.\nShe trained initially under Pandit Narayanrao Datar and later\, under her mother Srimati Manik Bhide. Ashwiniji has won numerous awards\, including “Pandit Jasraj Gaurav Puraskar”\, which was conferred on the occasion of Panditji’s 75th birthday and the “Kumar Gandharva Samman” by the Government of Madhya Pradesh – the first female Hindustani vocalist to have been decorated with this prestigious national award. Ashwiniji has numerous recordings to her credit and is the author of “Ragarachananjali”\, a much-lauded book of her self-composed bandishes. She has performed at all prestigious music conferences In India and abroad. His family is an integral part of his musical life: his wife Smt. Durba Bhattacharyya\, a gifted singer and harmonium accompanist\, and their daughter Mitra\, an emerging young vocalist\, often share the stage with him—embodying the living tradition of music passed from generation to generation. \nFor this special Raga-Mala Toronto season finale on October 25th\, Shantanu is joined by Canadian brothers Jonathan Kay and Andrew Kay\, long-time disciples who immersed themselves in the guru-shishya parampara\, living and studying within his family’s musical orbit in Kolkata for nearly a decade. Shantanu also studied with Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata. \nShantanu has sung at many major festivals in India such as the Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan\, Allauddin Khan Smriti Samaroh\, Sangeet Natak Akademi Festival\, to name a few. He is featured regularly on radio and TV\, and has travelled widely in Canada\, USA\, UK\, France\, Italy\, Finland\, Germany\, Australia and Singapore. \nHe has conducted music workshops at schools all over the world\, composed numerous Raag-based ensemble compositions\, written articles for journals and books\, compositions of devotional songs and meditation music\, released in CDs. \nShantanu Bhattacharyya’s music school Aalor Pathe Raga Dhwani in Kolkata has won accolades from one and all\, for the brilliant performances of the young pupils learning under him in the guru-shishya tradition. \nSri Sudhir Kumar Ghorai is an accomplished Tabla artist and a senior disciple of the legendary maestro\, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee since 1990. Under his guru’s guidance\, Sudhir has mastered the nuances of Tabla and establishing himself as a sought-after accompanist for both vocal and instrumental classical music. \nSudhir was born into a musical family and began his early training under his cousin\, Shri Amulya Kala\, and later refined his skills under Shri Bankim Maity and Shri Nirmal Adhikary. Before he becoming a disciple Pandit Anindo Chatterjee\, he had received advanced training from Shri Asit Pal. To enhance his artistry and accompaniment skills\, he has also trained under eminent musicians such as Pandit Partho Sarathi and Pandit Shantanu Bhattacharyya. \nSudhir is graded with All India Radio and regularly participates in prestigious concerts. He has performed at numerous renowned platforms across India and Bangladesh\, including The All Bengal Music Conference (Kolkata)\, The Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture (Kolkata) and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Festival in New Delhi\, to name a few.   He has had accompanied many distinguished maestros such as Pandit Vinayak Torvi\, Pandit Shantanu Bhattacharyya\, Pandit Debasish Bhattacharya\, Pandit Partho Sarathi\, to seal his reputation as a senior tabla artist. \nSmt. Durba Bhattacharyya is an acclaimed performer (vocalist as well as a harmonium accompanist)\, and is a guru of Hindustani classical vocal music – Khayal\, Bhajan and Ragashrayee Bengali songs. A regular broadcaster from Akashvani Kolkata\, she has performed all over India and in USA\, Canada & Europe. Durba is an ex-scholar of ITC Sangeet Research Academy under Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty\, and like her husband Pandit Shantanu Bhattacharyya\, has learnt extensively from Late Guruma Meera Banerjee\, the doyenne of Patiala gharana. She is a Gold Medalist from Pracheen Kala Kendra Chandigarh\, and has several music albums to her credit. \nMitra Bhatacharyya has learnt singing from her mother\, Smt. Durba Bhattacharyya\, and has been taking advanced taalim from her father\, Pandit Shantanu Bhattacharyya. \nShe stood first in some of the National level raag sangeet competitions and has performed in several cities in India\, as well as in Italy\, USA and Canada. \nMitra has pursued both her Bachelor’s and Masters in Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University\, Kolkata; and aspires for a synthesis of music and academics in herself to present an integrated form of art that is rooted and yet ever-evolving. \nShe also thoroughly enjoys training younger children in the fundamentals of raag sangeet. \nJonathan and Andrew Kay\, the award-winning and innovative multi-instrumentalist brothers\, embarked on their musical journey as jazz saxophonists at Humber College in Toronto. Inspired by the spiritual revelations of Alice and John Coltrane in the late 60s\, they dedicated themselves to Coltrane’s quest for a transcultural theory of musical transcendence\, which ultimately led them to India. Their seven-year sojourn in Kolkata proved transformative as they immersed themselves in the art of North Indian Raga under the guidance of their guru\, Pandit Shantanu Bhattacharyya. The Kay brothers received accolades from India’s maestros for their devotion and commitment to Raga\, emerging as pioneers in expressing its intricate nuances on the saxophone and earning recognition for rendering the full development of Raga in both vocal and instrumental styles. Jonathan also spent three years in Santiniketan studying the esraj in the lineage of Ranadhir Roy with his guru\, Abir Singh Khangura. \nPushing the boundaries of their craft\, they have introduced innovative techniques\, including Jonathan’s creation of the Shruti-phone\, a non-tempered saxophone designed to express the subtle shrutis (micro-tones) of Raga\, and Andrew’s development of a full set of tuned Himalayan singing bowls. Their deep engagement with Indian Classical music has led to collaborations with some of India’s most esteemed Maestros\, including Subhankar Banerjee\, Bickram Ghosh\, Tejendra Majumdar\, Ronu Majumdar\, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt\, Subhen Chatterjee\, and Subhajyoti Guha. Through their dedication\, innovation\, and collaborations\, Jonathan and Andrew Kay have become internationally recognized as artists who bring the timeless spirit of Indian Classical music into new sonic horizons while remaining rooted in the tradition of Raga. \n

Ramdas Palsule for the past 6 years.  He has also received vocal lessons from Pt. Suresh Bapat for the past 8 years. \nRigved has accompanied renowned artists such as Vidushi Padma Talwalkar\, Pt. Ajoy Chakraborthy\, and Pt. SUMMARY:Vocal Recital by Aniruddh Aithal
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to have the opportunity to present a vocal recital by Aniruddh Aithal. Aniruddh will be accompanied by local artists Rigved Deshpande and Sushant Anantharam. \nAniruddh Aithal is a 25-year-old Hindustani classical musician\, vocal music being his area of expertise. From a very young age\, Aniruddh was always exposed to classical music\, primarily because of his parents who are avid listeners of classical music. He formally started learning at the age of 10 from Smt. Geetha Garud Prithviraj\, daughter and disciple of maestro Pt. D.S Garud. After 8 years of rigorous training\, Aniruddh is now receiving training from Dr. Ashok Huggannavar\, a disciple of Pt. Lingaraj Buwa Yaraguppi\, Pt. Basavaraj Rajguru and Pt. Sangameshwar Gurav. \nAniruddh won the All India radio national level competition in the year 2017. He has also won numerous medals at a university level for his college at youth festivals held every year. He is also the recipient of scholarships given by the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT)\, New Delhi and the Karnataka Sangeetha Nruthya Academy. Aniruddh has also been conferred an A Grade by All India Radio in 2023. He has been fortunate enough to receive (apart from classical music Taleem) training in rare Rangageethes (theatre songs)\, Dasarapadas\, vachanas\, and tatvapadas from his gurus. DESCRIPTION:Raag-Mala Toronto\, in partnership with the Aga Khan Museum\, is proud to present a two part concert with Abhisek Lahiri & Omkar Dadarkar on Sunday April 21st at 4pm. \nAbhisek Lahiri\nAbhisek began learning from his father\, Pt. Alok Lahiri\, at a very young age. He started performing publicly at the age of 10\, though he got his first break at the national level when he was invited by Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia to play at his ‘Saath Saath Festival’ where he was named “The Wonder Kid”. Today\, he has created his own unique style of playing and has achieved many accolades across the globe. \nHe has toured extensively in India and abroad and has represented India at World Music Festivals in Morrocco and Cyprus. \nAbhisek will be accompanied by Indranil Mallick (Tabla) \nIndranil Mallick\nBorn into a musical family\, Indranil began to learn tabla when he was only five\, from his uncle\, Sri Montu Mallick. Later he was trained by Prof. Dhabol Bandyapadhaya and Sri Uttam Chakraborty\, senior disciple of Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri\, who is now his guru.  Indranil holds a “Sangeet Visharad”\, Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music focused on Tabla\, from the University of Chandigarh. \nAmong his many awards and distinctions in tabla performance\, he stood first in the Yuva Utsav organized by the state Government of West Bengal.  Keeping a rigorous performance schedule\, Indranil continues to perform with renowned artists in various music conferences in India and abroad. \nOmkar Dadarkar\nOmkar hails from a family of ‘Marathi Natyasangeet’ exponents\, he received his initial guidance from his aunt\, legendary vocalist Padmashree Manik Verma\, and thereafter from Ram Deshpande. After that he took training from Pt. Yashwantbua Joshi of Gwalior Gharana in the Guru-shishya Parampara tradition. After joining I.T.C. Sangeet Research Academy in 1999 as a scholar\, he has undergone rigorous training under the tutelage of guru Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar. He is now on the faculty of ITC SRA. \nOmkar has fast gained recognition as a regular concert performer all over India and abroad. Subhen Chatterjee (tabla) on Saturday March 16th 2024 7:30pm \nHidayat Khan\nHidayat Khan is a world-renowned musician\, maverick sitar player and vocalist. He belongs to a heritage that traces back seven generations toward the most treasured lineage of Indian classical music. Khan is the son of the legendary Ustad Vilayat Khan\, globally acclaimed as the greatest of all sitarists. \nHe harbors a rare\, creative brilliance that effortlessly takes him across all genres and nuances of music and can seamlessly transition from the very classical to the very colloquial\, from playing the intricate meands (slides) of the Etawa/VilayatkhaniGharana to performing with the Rolling Stones. \nHe has been fortunate to have performed at The Black Ball Charity in NYC with Alicia Keys and has collaborated with such illustrious musical names as Ndugu Chancler\, Ronnie Woods\, Usher\, Zakir Hussain\, Pete Townshend\, Will.I.Am\, Jay Z and Darryl Jones. \nJonathan Kay\nJonathan is a trained jazz saxophonist from Toronto\, Canada. In search of non-western ways of musical knowing\, he moved to Kolkata and Santiniketan for 10 years to learn in the guru-shishya paramparic tradition with vocalist Pandit Shantanu Bhattacharyya\, and esraj player Abir Singh Khangura.  \nHe is the first to render the full form of vocal raga music (vilambit khayal) on the shrutiphone\, a self-customized saxophone to play in raga temperament (tuning). He also is among the few performing boro esraj players\, playing in the tantra-kari style in the lineage of Ranadhir Roy.  \nBased on the integration of his experiences in the jazz and Raga music traditions\, he is cultivating a transcultural approach to experimental improvisation with his bands Monsoon\, Kayos Theory and The Coltrane Sutras.  \nPandit Subhen Chatterjee\nSubhen Chatterjee belongs to the Lucknow gharana and has studied under the tabla maestro Pandit Swapan Chowdhury. DESCRIPTION:Raag-Mala Toronto\, in partnership with the Aga Khan Museum\, is proud to present a vocal recital by Mitali Bhawmik on Saturday October 28th at 7:30pm \nMitali Bhawmik\, an artist of raag sangeet (Indian classical music)\, was born in Nogaon\, Assam\, India. She started music lessons at an early age under Sri Ajit Dutta. Later she had the privilege of receiving extensive training from Late Pandit Biren Phukan. Later\, she received lessons from the Late Vidushi Meera Banerjee and Late Padma Bhushan Pandit V. G. Jog the famous violin maestro. Pandit Jog’s vast and extensive experience in the different gharanas has helped Mitali blend the best of the different traditions in her misic\, in contrast to sticking to a single traditional Gharana. This has been the essence of Pandit Jog’s philosophy in music and training methodology. \nMitali has also been receiving advanced training in semi-classical music from Srimati Dahlia Rahut\, a senior disciple of Vidushi Girija Devi\, a legend of Indian Classical Music. \nMitali has performed in several concerts at prestigious venues in India\, USA\, UK\, and Europe. She is the recipient of the 2021 Excellence in the Arts Award from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission. \nCurrently residing in New Jersey\, Mitali is the Director of Ethnomedia Music Studio\, where she teaches and promotes raag sangeet to the younger generation. She has carved a niche for herself as one of the sought-after vocalists of her generation with a firm grounding in Gwalior gharana gayaki – the tradition’s style of singing. She has an impressive lineage: her grandfather was late Pandit Gajananbuva Joshi and her great- grandfather Pt. Antubua Joshi\, an eminent court musician in the state of Aundh. \nPallavi Joshi\, like her elder sister Apoorva\, represents the 5th generation of the rich musical tradition. Her training started at the age of 5 from her grandfather Pt. Gajananbuva Joshi. After the demise of her guru\, she learnt under her uncle Pt. Madhukar Joshi\, her aunt Dr. Sucheta Bidkar and her father Shri. Manohar Joshi. This is part of Massey College’s Focus on India.\n\nRenowned tabla player Ravi Naimpally and saxophonist Andrew Kay will be jointed by Junior Fellow and Indian Classical Music (ICM) trained vocalist Sourojeet Chakraborty\, in conversation with Junior Fellow and jazz bassist Sam Little.\n\nSourojeet\, Ravi and Andrew will each perform a piece representing a key element of the Hindustani classical music tradition\, and all three will join for a collaborative piece at the end.
