The Raag-Mala Toronto family is saddened to hear the news of the passing of one of the titans of raag sangeet, Padma Vibhushan Pandit Shivkumar Sharma.
Pandit ji single-handedly raised the santoor from being primarily a folk instrument, to a solo instrument of Indian classical music, comparable in stature to sitar and sarod. He performed many times for Raag-Mala Toronto, starting with our first seasons in the early 1980s.
Pandit ji leaves behind a tremendous legacy of recordings and generations of disciples. He was loved by all who met him or saw him in performance. He will be deeply missed. Om Shanti.
