About Begum Parveen Sultana

Parveen’s voice, spanning almost four octaves, maintains an astonishing musicality and clarity.  She can render classical Khayal and other genres such as Thumri and Bhajan with equal ease.  She has also famously sung for films – including songs like “Kaun Gali Gayo Shyam” (Pakeezah) and “Hame Tumse Pyar Kitna” (Kudrat).  With her musical prowess and amazing rapport with audiences, Parveen is widely regarded among the top artists in India today.

Parveen was the youngest recipient of the Padma Shree in 1976, followed by the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1998 and the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in India, in 2014.

Begum Sultana started her formal training at the age of five under her father and gave her first classical recital at the age of twelve.  She later studied under the maestro Acharya Pt. Chinmoy Lahiri.

It was under the vocalist Sangeet Martand Ustad Dilshad Khan, however, that she would hone her absolutely unique singing style.  She has gone on to perform all over India and overseas, earlier often with her Ustad. Their many jugalbandi vocal duets are most cherished by aficionados, and regarded as being among the most valuable contributions to the world of Indian Classical Music.

Begum Parveen Sultana will be accompanied by Mukundraj Deo (tabla) & Shrinivas Acharya (harmonium).
